“The Less I Know the Better” de Tame Impala ha estado en mi primera canción durante muchos años.
Mongo.

Mongo Wan is an illustrator that I found on instagram recently, from the moment I saw her illustrations I was struck by the colors and the originality of them, I feel like she has a fresh perspective. The artists that I usually share with you guys on these Art Thursdays always make me feel something when I see her artwork and Mongo was definitely no exception.
I stole the information that Mongo leaves about herself on her website as an introduction to the interview that I had the opportunity to do with her.
Mongo is a freelance illustrator and graphic designer,
she works and lives in Taipei, Taiwan.
Inspired by female beauty, animals, nature, all the things that fantasized her mind. Her work illustrates portraits blended with botanical, animals, and whimsical spaces, cultivates unconscious mood with gentle watercolor and painterly lines.
1.- Would you say that you’ve always wanted to be an illustrator? Was there a key situation in your life that made you realize that you wanted to be an illustrator?
I wanted to be a manga artist when I was a kid. Japanese comics have a huge impact on my childhood. During my student years, I really enjoy drawing portraits of family and friends. After graduating from uni, I have been a graphic designer as a day job for few years, when some people asked me for personal commissions, I realized that being an illustrator can be a serious career.
2.- I’ve seen that your projects are related to animals and nature, which are concepts that inspire your art. Do you follow a process/criteria when picking your projects? If so would you be open to share with us some of it?
I have been tired of drawing people for a time, then I found pleasure watching and sketching botanical and animals around me, soon I came up with the idea of combining natural elements with the human body in a balanced way. I really love the concept of symbiosis. To be honest, I am still experimenting at the moment, my way is simply looking for things that bring me joy, and focusing on transforming thoughts into concrete images. There are many illustration challenges hosted on SNS (social network service) like #DrawThisInYourStyle or #Inktober and many more themes, those are great ways to practice my own vision of narrative.
3.- Exploring the work you share on your website I was able to see that you’ve worked creating wedding designs, packaging designs, logos, among other designs. What is the work that you enjoy the most and why?
Portraits and character drawing is my favorite theme. It also depends on my clients. It would be more enjoyable if they give me more space to decide the art style.
4.- If you hadn’t studied Visual Communication what else would you have liked to study and why?
Fine art I guess. It was my second choice at the time. I would like to learn more about traditional drawing skills or techniques of craft-making.
5.- Who are the artists that inspire you the most?
It’s really hard to answer because there are so many talented artists and creators flowing on the internet. I would say Sailor Moon and Clover are the comics that inspired my art at the starting point.

6.- Is there someone you look up to? (Could be because of art related things or something else). Who is it and why?
I usually get lost when I try to look up to someone, though I still enjoy admiring good art and lifestyle. I want to share the words I saw today:” There is no one better to be than myself.” (from artist @harmonywillowstudio on Instagram.)
7.- If your whole art style had a sound effect or soundtrack which one would it be and why?
There are so many songs on my personal playlist! “The Less I Know the Better” by Tame Impala has been on my first song for over years. Amazing music and great video to kick off my brain and look for inspiration.
8.- How do you feel approached by the inspiration to create? Does it come to you in the form of music, movies, literature, people, food, etc. (maybe all but is there one that seems to impact you the most?)
I love soaking in the music and often binge-watching movies and TV series in my leisure time. My inspiration often comes from songs’ vibe or characters from stories plus a little imagination of my own.
9.- Would you share with us what is your process when elaborating/coming up with an illustration?
I like to collage things together. I sketch down my ideas on paper or my iPad. I often snapshot anything interesting (something like a bizarre plant on the street or funny ornaments in a vintage shop) I saw in daily life. These are the sources I put into my illustration work.
10.- What do you enjoy the most about your work as an illustrator and what do you like the least?
I am grateful to express my thoughts and communicate with others by sharing spiritual energy through illustration art. Although this work is often low-paid and hard to be sustainable financially for me right now.
11.- What is your dream project?
Mural painting is fun. I used to paint on caravans and small pieces of wall, and they are one of the best memories.
If I have the chance to collaborate with someone, making my illustration into animation will be exciting.
Thanks for inviting me, I think it was fun.
Best,
Mongo
