Alice with dolls by Joy Ang.
¿Qué música te inspira a dibujar?

Sophia is an artist that I admire for her art but also for her ability to balance her career as a dentist during the day and the engagement she has with her instagram community on her instagram at night, where she is a host and participant in challenges like #dtiys. I hope you enjoy both her art and everything that she lets us see about her way of thinking and creating through her responses. I love seeing artists my age from other parts of the world be as successful as Sophia is, it inspires me a lot and encourages me to keep drawing and discovering / studying more artists. Thank you very much Sophia for the interview!

Where were you born? Do you still live there? Would you like to live somewhere else?
I was born in Palmerston North, New Zealand. I currently live in my hometown but haven’t always. I lived in Dunedin when I was studying for my Bachelor of Dental Surgery. When I was growing up, I always thought I wouldn’t live in my hometown but having come back, there is a nice quiet of this place that I love. If I was to live somewhere else, it would be awesome to be closer to water.
How old are you?
26
From a Q&A that you shared in your highlights I was able to see that you’ve been to Hong Kong, China and Macau, have these trips inspired your work in some way? What have you learned from these experiences?
I don’t think these trips have affected my art ideas or concepts. I have always visited my family over there every few years (until COVID). I think overall my heritage has affected my character design and costuming rather than the holidays to these places. However, these trip have definitely made me more proud of where my culture comes from and how different people live in other areas of the world. It gives you a deeper appreciation for the world.
I understand that you’re self taught, for how many years have you been learning by yourself? Do you have any advice for other self-taught artists?
According to my parents, I have been drawing and painting since I was in kindergarten. It probably stems from watching my grandfather doodle all the time when I was young. And then I stopped and didn’t repick it up until I was about twelve. I traced and copied for many years at that age but never posted anything online. I started creating original pieces around fifteen after meeting friends who did. My advice would be to study other people’s art styles and see what you like best. It’s okay to copy (for personal use and if posting, to ask and credit). It teaches you a lot. Your hands get used to movements and you learn what you do and don’t like in your style. It takes time to build up to your own unique style and it is always evolving. Practice is key!
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given? (Whether it is art related or not).
Not everyone is going to like you. Some people just don’t gel. Don’t take it personally and just focus on your own growth.
What were your favorite subjects at school? Why did you decided to study Dental Surgery? If you hadn’t studied DS, what would you have studied?
Science. I love anatomy and chemistry. It is very fascinating to me how things work and react. I decided on being a dentist after I finished my orthodontic treatment. My orthodontist was amazing and I thought why not marry science and art?
I might’ve considered being a tattoo artist if I wasn’t a dentist.
What is / are your favorite piece (s) of art at the moment (done by someone else)?
Ohhhh I love anything conceptual or emotional that gets me thinking. I don’t have a particular recent one that pops in my mind but I have two absolute favorite artworks that I go back to when I need inspiration.
You mentioned that your absolutely favorite artists are Ayami Kojima and Thores Shibamoto, could you go deeper into why and what is it about them that you like/admire? Would you like to add more artists?
I just love the detail they put into their work. They are both involved with video games. The technique they use in their works are just admirable. I particularly like the grotesque stuff Ayami Kojima does (I have her artbook and I loveeee flipping through it). Joy Ang’s work for Alice Madness Returns is also very satisfying to look at. It’s just the lighting and powerful imagery.
What is the process that you usually have when elaborating an illustration?
I start with a very tiny thumbnail in my sketchbook. That way I can scribble multiple composition without wasting much time. Once I have one that I am happy with the flow and main concepts, I either take a photo and blow it up on procreate or redo a larger sketch in procreate by blocking out the main shapes. That’s when I can lay out the detail, erase and add without having a ton of pencil smudges and marks. Once I have the digital sketch, I print out this to the size I want traditionally and transfer over with a light pad. I go straight into line work with ink pens when transferring. I need to minimize the amount of graphite or have none on the final transfer as it can mix with my copic markers and cause problematic marks that can’t be erased. Once the linework is done, I lay down colors with markers and then add details with colored pencils and white pen.
How has your practice changed over time?
I used to only do colored pencils until I could afford copic markers. So I use to not do any digital sketching at all. It used to be straight graphite pencil to line work etc. However I wouldn’t do a thumbnail back then and so the flow of the pieces were usually missing. It’s a lot harder to make a good composition when you are so focused on one part of the picture at a time.
What music inspires you to draw?
I don’t actually listen to music while drawing. I just have YouTube on the background and it’s usually random videos ranging from Vlogs to SFX makeup to random book reviews etc.
How do you personally relate to / connect with your original characters? Who is your favorite original character? Could you share with us their story?
Of course! I think my original characters each have a little bit of me. It allows me to let that part of me have fun. They also have parts that aren’t me which lets me explore different personalities.
Mmmm favorite? That’s a hard one. It definitely depends on my mood. I switch favorites a lot but I think my favorite three at the moment are Wilheimina (Willow), Ophelia and Melusine. They are spirit summoners.
Willow summons the spirits of her great, great grandparents who present themselves as a ram and an avian. She can harness her spirits to heal and so naturally she studied medicine to help others with those powers.
Ophelia and Melusine come from a desert village. Melusine was found abandoned, outcasted by her community de ella. Ophelia’s grandmother of her adopted Melusine. So they grew up together and they argue / banter a lot. Melusine summons scorpions with a pipe. She doesn’t smoke tobacco but it would seem that way with how Ophelia constantly complains about it. Ophelia summons spiders through runes and incantations.
I could keep going, but you would be here for a long time.
Besides Art do you have another hobby?
Boxing. I do that with my partner quite often. I also loveeee finding as many Escape Rooms to do as I can. I have literally traveled up and down New Zealand to do as many as I can.
What is your favorite kind of movies?
I love the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I love comedy and I love a good animation. Coco and Soul were a couple of my favorites.
The Addams Family movies of the 90s, Coraline and Corpse Bride are October must-watch every year.
Do you have any current or upcoming projects that you would like to share with us?
None in particular. I do have a bunch of work in progress pieces. The current in the works are: Melusine pieces, Emilia pieces and a few superhero fanart commissions. Hahah nothing too exciting.
That is all! Thanks for the interview.
Cheers!
